A New Fireplace, Approved For Installation
A new type of fireplace has been accepted and approved by the DOB and the FDNY. Unlike conventional fireplaces, this one does not require a flu or venting of any kind.
According to the DOB, the apparatus is defined as a decorative fireplace that burns alcohol rather than wood or gas, similar to a sterno can. The fuel itself is composed mostly of isopropryl alcohol.
Technically, this fireplace is approved in the eyes of regulators because it is used for warming, rather than heating a room. Since it requires no connection to gas, electric or water, it requires no permits either.
The fireplace is manufactured and marketed by NY Hearth Cabinet Co, and more information is found on their web site.
