Has This Happened to You???
Over the last year, there’s been no end to the news about the new computer systems at the DOB. Recently, one of our major clients stumbled into a bit of an anomaly which seems directly related to this upgrade. Here’s the background:
This client has run two businesses for the last twenty years. They were both a commercial contractor and a 1, 2, and 3 family contractor. New regulations require separate licensing for 1, 2 and 3 family work.
The recent economy led to a slowdown in the 1, 2 and 3 family work, and this client decided to trim some costs and focus on the commercial side. They decided not to renew the 1, 2 and 3 family licenses.
Recently, this client attempted to secure permits for a large commercial build out, and filed all paperwork and plans. His insurance and tracking numbers are current.
Surprisingly, the work permit was denied.
Why? Because the DOB database lists his tracking number as expired. The number appears expired because he did not renew the residential license.
It seems that in the major upgrade, the DOB links all licenses to a contractor’s tracking number. If a contractor makes a business decision to pursue one type of work over another, they now face the real risk of denial of all permits.
Does this sound familiar to anyone reading? If so, please let me know. I’ve discussed this with the commissioner and have insight on resolving this or similar issues in the future.
