New Building Zoning Review Goes Parallel
Starting June 1, 2009, the Zoning Review process for new buildings will become more efficient.
Historically, zoning review for new buildings was a two step process. After plans were submitted, an examiner would provide comments regarding any zoning issues they uncovered. The comments would need to be incorporated into the plans, and the entire package would be resubmitted for a second examiner to review.
Now, the zoning examination will run in parallel, with two examiners receiving the plans at the same time. The examiners will meet and combine their comments into a single comprehensive review.
While it may take longer for two examiners to complete their reviews and centralize their comments, this approach will certainly shrink the timeline for the overall review process.
This process will be incorporated in all boroughs, which means bringing a second set of eyes to outer borough zoning issues for the first time.
