    New Year, New Sidewalk Shed

The Mayor and DOB commissioner have released a new Buildings Bulletin which describes the new sidewalk shed design.

The Bulletin establishes acceptance criteria for urbanSHED, an alternative sidewalk shed design which encourages improved pedestrian experience, provides increased light and air to the sidewalk, and enables easy access to building entrances.

The design for urbanSHED – formally named Urban Umbrella – originated in a contest which drew world-wide participation. The challenge was steep, with the City seeking a design that improved the overall pedestrian experience, while maintaining light, safety, structural integrity, green standards, and about a dozen other requirements.

The new sidewalk shed meets all criteria – and should enhance the NYC experience with safety and design features such as the following:

Sustainable LED lighting with an 11-year lifespan

Graceful lighting strategy that enhances storefronts

Translucent overhead panels that transmits natural ambient light to the sidewalk

Horizontal load equal to 2% of its vertical load

Elimination of cross-bracing that visually obstructs storefronts and building entrances

300 pounds per square foot load capacity to protect the public from falling debris and allow for safe construction above

Adjustable feet that pivot and extend to accommodate changes in sidewalk pitch, eliminating the need for wood shims
